This museum is located in central Tetouan, it was inaugurated on 19 July 1940 and contains a collection of artefacts mainly from digs conducted since the early 20th century at major sites in North Morocco as the ancient Roman city Lixus.
Collections
The Museum collection contains artefacts from three different eras : prehistoric, antique and Islamic from several sites and monuments of northern Morocco in particular Lixus, Kaf Taht L’ghar, M’zora, Tamuda and Ksar Es Sghir.
The collections are composed of different ancient objects such as stone tools, bronze age objects, axes, prehistoric human remains, earthen and bronze lamps, ceramics, amphoras, mosaics, Libyan-Berber inscriptions on stone, old coins and bronze statuettes.
The itinerary is thematic, and emphasizes the permanent exposition of archaeological findings of the region.
Your visit to the museum begins in the garden where you can see five magnificent mosaics of the 2th century found in Lixus, collections of funerary stones and ceramics of the Islamic period found in the cemetery of Tetoan, a collection of Roman amphorae, Roman millstones, marble and stone columns and a collection of portuguese vestiges found in the site 'Ksar Seghir'.
